Rotating your tyres

Rotating your cars tyres is a great way to increase their life span and reduce uneven wear. It should be done roughly every 6,000 miles/ 6 months and could add many miles to the life of your tyres. Tyres are an expensive outlay so its well worth getting them swapped around and if you invest in some axle stands you can save even more by doing it yourself.

You’ll need to check the construction of your tyres first as mixing different types of tyre can adversely affect the cars handling and is illegal in some configurations. Also watch out for directional tyres (often fitted on sports cars) as these can be swapped front to back but should stay on the same side of the vehicle.

The way the cars wheels are driven will determine how the tyres should be rotated. Front wheel drive vehicles should have the fronts moved to the rear on the same side. The rears move to the front, swapping sides. Rear wheel drive cars are the opposite to this. For 4 wheel drive vehicles all tyres are swapped diagonally.
