Fuel Saving mode

Despite a recent drop in global oil prices and subsequent savings at the pumps, fuelling up is still a real pain in the wallet. Making the most of the fuel you put in your tank makes sense and there are several things to consider. Diesel engines offer greater efficiency over petrol, though diesel is more costly per litre and recent concerns over particulate emissions may see increased congestion charges applied to diesel vehicles in the future. Most independent trials suggest that premium fuels offer little benefit to fuel economy, so avoid these if cost is your only concern.
Regular servicing and the correct oil will keep your engine as efficient as possible, and make sure tyre pressures are correct (see the manufacturers specifications). Cold starts use more fuel so try to plan short trips together (shopping, trip to the tip etc.) When driving, try to keep moving and build up momentum with as little throttle as possible. Remember, scrubbing off speed with your brakes will cost you as you use fuel getting back up to speed, but always put safety before fuel economy. Don’t carry excess weight and remove roof racks and boxes when not in use, as these add a lot of drag. Air conditioning and other electrical in car devices will all reduce your fuel efficiency.
