The F1 season has recently begun with the first race in Australia taking place last week. This season has seen massive changes to the way the qualifying is carried out and has had mixed reviews.
The qualifying used to be based on three sectors. In 2006 the previous three part knockout system was introduced where at the end of each qualifying sector the bottom six cars would be knocked out, leaving the remaining to fight for a place on the grid in Q3.
The new rules that have been introduced for the 2016 season state that the first sector (Q1) will run for 16 mins and after the 7 minute the slowest driver will be eliminated taking the last position on the start up grid for the race. Every one and a half minutes after this another driver will be eliminated. Q2 sees a similar thing (running for 15 mins) but the first driver is eliminated 6 mins after start up and then one every 90 seconds. Leaving Q3 will run for 14 minutes and first driver eliminated after 5 mins and so on.
