Hire car travel tips

There are times when we need to hire a car, it may be that yours has broken down or you need to do a long journey and you’re not sure if your car is up to it or possible that you need a bigger car to go on holiday with.

When hiring a car regardless of if it is for work or for pleasure, there are some things you should consider and check before signing a hire agreement that could save you quite a sum of money.

The excess that is applied on a hire car policy can be extremely high, even up to £2000 with some hire policies. This can be very off putting and make some people reluctant to hire. One way to avoid this is to buy an excess waiver. You can usually buy this from the company that you hire the car from but they will often charge you up to £20 per day for the extra cover. If you shop around online you can often pick up a policy for only a few pounds per day.

Some hire companies will hire the car out to you full of fuel for you to return it empty. If you are not going to be using a full tank of fuel then you may end up paying for fuel you are not going to use so it’s always worth asking if they will allow you to return it with the same amount of fuel in that it had when you picked it up.
