Fixing a scratch at home – is it worth it?

The simple answer is it depends on how you source and dispose of your car. You can get some good paint matches for the more mainstream colours fairly easily from high street retailers, and there are some well-performing masking products out there.

These may help you if you’re either buying outright & selling privately, or buying your car at the end of an agreement to sell privately, because private buyers aren’t as diligent, but it may not be worth the risk if you’re returning your car at the end of a company car or private leasing or PCP agreement. Unless you’re confident of the finish, it’s likely that your repair will be very visible to a dealer or de-fleet centre and you’ll potentially face a charge, or loss of resale value, due to a poor repair.
